Abstract

This study examined the relationship between environmental conditions and the quality of life of residents in Warri South-West, Delta State. A multi-stage random and systematic sampling technique was employed, with questionnaires administered across sixteen communities and interviews conducted with local chiefs in three wards to provide contextual insights. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulations, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and multiple regression techniques. Findings reveal a significant relationship between residents’ environmental conditions and their quality of life. Socio-economic characteristics such as educational attainment, household size, and income were found to influence environmental conditions, while age and marital status showed no significant effect. The study highlights that poor environmental settings limit sustainable housing, especially in areas prone to recurrent environmental hazards. Recommendations include leveraging scheduled state environmental sanitation exercises for public enlightenment campaigns, emphasizing proper waste disposal, and discouraging the dumping of refuse in drains and along roadsides to improve environmental quality and residents’ overall well-being.
